    Fortune Teller

Evoking childhood games, the playful dimension of the Oulipo literary movement, and ancient forms of divination, Fortune Teller draws inspiration from the Yijing, or Book of Changes. This ancestral system, based on eight natural elements and sixty-four trigrams, provides the framework for a poetic and interactive narrative. Confronted with ever-changing messages, each viewer becomes an interpreter, connecting personal memories to the symbols that emerge. Through this act of interpretation, each encounter gives rise to a new story, contributing to the ever-evolving narrative of Fortune Teller. Fortune Teller unfolds through an augmented reality narrative inhabited by Spirits embodied in everyday objects. Some remain hidden, others reveal themselves, and a few even begin to speak. Like a “choose-your-own-adventure” story, each encounter guides the viewer on a quest to find a life companion: one of the Spirits of Fortune Teller. The experience features eye motifs integrated into frescoes and artworks, inviting visitors to bring the surrounding space to life. Animated by these gazes, the exhibition space itself becomes a living narrative, where architecture and imagination merge. Visitors are invited to download the Fortune Teller app for free to awaken each eye and explore a branching, tree-like narrative that reveals the hidden world of Spirits inhabiting the objects around them. Created and directed by Julie Stephen Chheng · Animation: Thomas Pons · Development: Julien Hognon (Volumique) · Music: Apollo Noir · Touch development: Pauline Millet.

URAMADO AR, the Awakening of the Tanukis

Discover Uramado AR, The Awakening of the Tanukis, an immersive and participatory augmented reality experience created by French artist Julie Stephen Chheng. Designed as a scavenger hunt, Uramado AR, The Awakening of the Tanukis invites us to explore our differences in a playful way, through a narrative in which reality and imagination intertwine. The journey tells the story of the Tanukis, nature spirits awakening in the city. Scattered throughout the Institut français and hidden to varying degrees, the Tanukis invite participants to download the free Uramado AR app and embark on their scavenger hunt. As participants discover the Tanukis, the creatures come to life, express their surprise, and ask questions of the viewer. At the end of the experience, participants discover which natural element their Totem Animal is associated with, based on their answers! By bringing her colorful illustrations to life through augmented reality, Julie Stephen Chheng transforms the smartphone into a magical lens through which to view the real world, closely intertwining the physical spaces where the illustrations are placed with the virtual universe they reveal. Inspired by Japanese mythology, the world of Uramado also draws on shamanic culture and various personality tests.
