Walking tour: the houses of Luang Prabang

About

What if you could travel back in time and rediscover Luang Prabang through the eyes of those who drew, observed and told its story? The Institut français du Laos in Luang Prabang invites you on an exceptional walk with Francis Engelmann, a journey to the heart of the history, heritage and architecture of Laos’s former royal capital. Through his watercolours, Luang Prabang reveals itself in a new light. Old buildings, temples, traditional houses and townscapes bear witness to a rich history, shaped by cultural exchange, Lao traditions and the influences of the centuries. Every street, every façade and every architectural detail tells part of this precious, living memory. But this time, it is not only about looking at pictures: it is about seeing them come to life before your eyes. Along the way, Francis Engelmann will guide you through the streets of Luang Prabang, creating a dialogue between his watercolours and the town as it is today. The places drawn on paper find their reality again, so you can compare the drawings with the buildings, the painted perspectives with the townscapes, and memories of the past with the heritage still visible. This walk is a chance to take a fresh look at places that may feel familiar, to discover often overlooked details and to better understand the changes that have shaped the town over time. The watercolours become true windows onto the past, tools to observe, compare and imagine Luang Prabang across different eras. Beyond architectural discovery, the walk offers another way of experiencing heritage: by walking, observing and listening to the stories that walls, streets and buildings have to tell. It invites you to take the time to see the town differently, to grasp the links between its history and its identity today, and to appreciate the full richness of this exceptional urban landscape. Whether you love history, art and watercolour, Lao heritage, or are simply curious to know Luang Prabang better, this meeting offers an original experience at the crossroads of art, memory and discovery. A walk where past and present meet, to discover Luang Prabang as you may never have seen it before. Departure from the Institut français.
