About

A special session to dive into the world of Uramado AR, the Awakening of the Tanukis, the immersive, participatory augmented reality experience by French artist Julie Stephen Chheng, on Saturday 7 November, 4pm to 6pm, at the Institut français in Luang Prabang. The treasure hunt: Tanukis, nature spirits awakening in the city, are hidden around the Institut français. With the free URAMADO AR app, participants set off to find them. When they find one, they point the camera at it: the Tanuki comes to life, wonders and asks them questions. At the end, everyone discovers the element of their totem animal. The drawing workshop: each participant receives a Tanuki sticker, brings it to life with a tablet, then draws the scenery around it. The mask workshop: everyone cuts out and assembles their mask, which then comes to life in augmented reality. The paper toy workshop: everyone cuts out, folds and glues their paper toy, then watches it come alive on the tablet. Each workshop lasts about 20 minutes, and you can do several in a row. The group can split between a workshop and the treasure hunt. Everyone leaves with their augmented reality creation. Ages 6 and up. Registration required, with the Institut français in Luang Prabang: registration form below or WhatsApp.

Project history

Uramado AR began at the Villa Kujoyama, which gave it its name, meaning “window” and “reverse side of the paper” in Japanese, a poetic way of naming augmented reality. A prototype was shown at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature, then developed into its full version for Digital Choc (and Media Ambition Tokyo) in Tokyo and the Tilt Festival in New York. Since 2019, Uramado AR has been shown in museums and institutions around the world as well as in France. It is an evolving world in which the characters transform over the years.
